“Resilient Cities in Tanzania” – Data Visualization Challenge 2019

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.3″ text_font=”Lato||||||||” text_text_color=”#000000″ text_font_size=”17px” text_line_height=”1.8em” header_font=”Lato||||||||” header_text_color=”#27AAE1″]

Why?

Tanzanian cities are vulnerable to floods and climate change impacts due to rapid and uncontrolled urban growth and insufficient urban planning. Digital (spatial) data can provide valuable insights and evidence on how cities can be planned, lived and developed in more resilient manner. This competition aims at finding data visualization solutions, which increase understanding for resilient urban development in Tanzania.

For whom?

Tanzanian university student groups interested in developing novel data visualization solutions to improve urban resilience in Tanzanian cities. We encourage students to form mixed teams of 3-5 persons, with different types of expertise (ICT, programming, geoinformatics, geography, urban planning, urban design, disaster management etc). The competition is ideal for university students interested in developing their digital data visualization skills through co-learning and group working, and finding visualization solutions for real world needs.

Themes in 2019

Challenge 1: Solid waste collection plan for Tanzanian cities

Planning proper solid waste management is a challenge for rapidly growing cities. During the rains, waste blocks the drainage and causes severe flooding, especially in informal settlements. There is a need for cities to organize their waste management more efficiently and identify potential locations and strategy for solid waste collection.

This challenge seeks visualizations of solid waste collection points, their placement and collection strategy. The users of the information are municipalities and solid waste collection companies.

Visualisation size for this theme: Only one Municipality to be selected either from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar for the challenge.

Possible data sets to explore for this theme:

  • Solid waste points: here
  • Amenities data – Infrastructure (Road, Schools, Public office, open spaces, hospital, churches, buildings, etc)
    1. Dar es Salaam Buildings and Roads: here
    2. Dar es Salaam Schools: here
    3. Dar es Salaam Public office: here
    4. Dar es Salaam open spaces: here
    5. Dar es Salaam hospital: here
    6. Dar es Salaam Churches: here

Challenge 2: Story of past floods for better situation analysis

Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar City experience destructive floods every year. For example, in 2015 and 2017 unusually intense rainfalls led to severe flash floods in Dar es Salaam, which caused losses of life, damages to the properties, and major disruption to the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Both cities suffer from the lack of proper situation analysis and action plan before and during the rainy seasons.

This theme seeks for data visualization solutions, which would tell the story of the flooding (choose Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar), and support authorities in making better situation analysis of the floods based on knowledge of the past floods and their impacts in the cities. The users of the visualization are local communities members and Municipalities.

Visualisation size for this theme: Only one Municipality to be selected either from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar for the challenge.

Challenge 3: Communicate risks and hazards to local communities via visualisations

Local urban communities are often the ones suffering the most from repeated floods. Thus, communicating knowledge of the floods to the communities, and helping them to develop coping strategies with the floods is very important. Maps and data visualizations could be very useful in this task.

This theme seeks for data visualization solutions, which can help local communities to better understand the risks associated with floods, and to improve their capacity to communicate and plan different coping strategies against floods in the future. The users of this information are the local communities, sub-ward and Ward leaders.

Visualisation size for this theme: Only one ward to be selected either from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar for the challenge.

  • Ward Data from CRD: here
  • Openstreetmap Data: here

    Why participate?

All participants completing the challenge get a certificate from Resilience Academy of their attendance. Best solutions will be awarded as follows: 1st Prize: 500 USD, 2nd prize 300 USD, 3rd prize 200 USD. Additionally, one team gets free attendance to Data Science training at CO-ICT in October 2019. This team is selected by the CO-ICT organizers of the course.

How to participate and what is the timeline?

Gather your team members (max 5 persons), choose the challenge theme, brainstorm your solution and register your team by September 1st, 2019 at 04:00 pm

Then get more familiar with the challenge and seek insights, harvest the data sets, test different tools and send your short concept note to competition mentors by September 6th, 2019.

Registered teams with their concept note are offered three check-point meetings with the competition mentors before the finals on October 2-3, 2019. The check-point sessions are organised on Mondays (9.9, 16.9, and 23.9) from 9 am to 12 noon at the campuses of UDSM, ARU, SUZA and SUA. On September 23rd, a pre-judge selects a maximum of 10 best solutions to the finals.
